Cholera: an overview with reference to the Yemen epidemic

Ali A. Rabaan

Frontiers of Medicine 2019, Volume 13, Issue 2,   Pages 213-228 doi: 10.1007/s11684-018-0631-2

Abstract: Cholera is a secretory diarrhoeal disease caused by infection with , primarily the O1 El Tor biotype. There are approximately 2.9 million cases in 69 endemic countries annually, resulting in 95 000 deaths. Cholera is associated with poor infrastructure and lack of access to sanitation and clean drinking water. The current cholera epidemic in Yemen, linked to spread of O1 (Ogawa serotype), is associated with the ongoing war. This has devastated infrastructure and health services. The World Health Organization had estimated that 172 286 suspected cases arose between 27th April and 19th June 2017, including 1170 deaths. While there are three oral cholera vaccines prequalified by the World Health Organization, there are issues surrounding vaccination campaigns in conflict situations, exacerbated by external factors such as a global vaccine shortage. Major movements of people complicates surveillance and administration of double doses of vaccines. Cholera therapy mainly depends on rehydration, with use of antibiotics in more severe infections. Concerns have arisen about the rise of antibiotic resistance in cholera, due to mobile genetic elements. In this review, we give an overview of cholera epidemiology, virulence, antibiotic resistance, therapy and vaccines, in the light of the ongoing epidemic in Yemen.

Design and realization of a remote monitoring and diagnosis and prediction system for large rotating

Shaohong WANG, Tao CHEN, Jianghong SUN

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2010, Volume 5, Issue 2,   Pages 165-170 doi: 10.1007/s11465-009-0090-1

Abstract: Traditional on-site fault diagnosis means cannot meet the needs of large rotating machinery for its performance and complexity. Remote monitoring and diagnosis technology is a new fault diagnosis mode combining computer technology, communication technology, and fault diagnosis technology. The designed remote monitoring and diagnosis and prediction system for large rotating machinery integrates the distributed resources in different places and breaks through shortcomings as the offline and decentralized information. The system can make further implementation of equipment prediction technology research based on condition monitoring and fault diagnosis, provide on-site analysis results, and carry out online actual verification of the results. The system monitors real-time condition of the equipment and achieves early fault prediction with great significance to guarantee safe operation, saves maintenance costs, and improves utilization and management of the equipment.

A multi-objective design method for seismic retrofitting of existing reinforced concrete frames using pin-supported rocking walls

Yue CHEN; Rong XU; Hao WU; Tao SHENG

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 9,   Pages 1089-1103 doi: 10.1007/s11709-022-0851-z

Abstract: Over the past several decades, a variety of technical ways have been developed in seismic retrofitting of existing reinforced concrete frames (RFs). Among them, pin-supported rocking walls (PWs) have received much attentions to researchers recently. However, it is still a challenge that how to determine the stiffness demand of PWs and assign the value of the drift concentration factor (DCF) for entire systems rationally and efficiently. In this paper, a design method has been exploited for seismic retrofitting of existing RFs using PWs (RF-PWs) via a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. Then, the method has been investigated and verified through a practical project. Finally, a parametric analysis was executed to exhibit the strengths and working mechanism of the multi-objective design method. To sum up, the findings of this investigation show that the method furnished in this paper is feasible, functional and can provide adequate information for determining the stiffness demand and the value of the DCF for PWs. Furthermore, it can be applied for the preliminary design of these kinds of structures.

Self-generation of machining precision and its realization in lapping of super precision solid balls

ZHANG Bopeng

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2008, Volume 3, Issue 3,   Pages 348-353 doi: 10.1007/s11465-008-0065-7

Abstract: This paper presents the principle of self-generation of machining precision by explaining its basic concept and five necessary conditions for forming a system with self-organization capability. A self-generation system is a kind of system with self-organization capability. The self-generation of machining precision for solid balls with super precision is emphatically explained. From the viewpoint of self-organization, there are three types of systems including system 1 with the self-regulation capability, 2 with the self-determination capability of goals, and 3 with the self-organization capability. Although they are all closed loop control systems, they have different constructions and functions. Necessary conditions for achieving self-generation of machining precision are given. Establishment of the system for machining solid balls with super precision is discussed. Self-generation of machining precision for solid balls with super precision on the basis of the capability of self-removal of errors is presented. Self-generation includes the ability of self-removal of errors for solid balls, convergence of self-removal of errors, self-generation of precision, and self-generating system for the given.

Management strategies of marine food resources under multiple stressors with particular reference of

Qisheng TANG

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2014, Volume 1, Issue 1,   Pages 85-90 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2014021

Abstract:

In this study two main management strategies are discussed: one is to develop resource conservation-based capture fisheries, and the other is to develop environmentally friendly aquaculture. During the resource recovery period, the development of environmentally friendly aquaculture should be encouraged, especially in integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, which is adaptive, efficient and sustainable. For future development and better understanding the ecosystem, it is necessary to further strengthen basic research.
